NIE, Residency, and What the Timelines Actually Look Like
The NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjero) is required for almost everything in Spain — buying property, opening a bank account, registering a business, or signing a rental contract. EU citizens typically obtain it within a few weeks; non-EU applicants for residency permits may wait two to four months depending on the permit type.
We prepare your full application, accompany you to appointments where required, and follow up with the authorities on your behalf. For time-sensitive situations — such as a property purchase with a fixed notary date — we advise on the fastest legal path and can apply using a power of attorney so you do not need to be present.
A common point of confusion: the NIE is an identification number, not a residency permit. If you intend to live in Spain for more than 90 days within a 180-day period, a separate residency application is required. We handle both.
